Best Outdoor Locations for Hanfu and Chinese Themed Photoshoots in Singapore
Singapore's modern, urban landscape may seem far from ideal for a hanfu photoshoot, given its limited traditional Chinese architecture. However, with a little creativity, even the city's most unexpected spots can become breathtaking backdrops that showcase the timeless elegance of hanfu. Here are some of our favorite locations:
1. Gardens by the Bay (Chinese Garden)
Nestled within the outdoor Heritage Gardens at Gardens by the Bay, this often overlooked spot features elements from a Chinese landscaped garden (庭院), including decorative rocks, bamboo groves and water features. If you trek a little further, the Serene Garden makes a beautiful photo spot with rocks and plants thoughtfully arranged in the style of a Japanese zen garden.
Pros:
On weekdays, the inner sections of the garden are usually quiet, offering a more private and serene setting for your photoshoot. With a diverse range of locations within the garden, you’ll have plenty of options to capture a variety of beautiful and unique images.
Cons:
Gardens by the Bay can be quite busy on weekends as it's a popular tourist destination. The Chinese Garden is located along the main path between the MRT station and other key attractions, which means your photoshoot may draw the attention of curious onlookers.
2. Jackie Chan Pavillions (SUTD)
Did you know there are actual antique houses from the Ming and Qing eras right here in Singapore? These historical treasures were specially transported from China and donated by none other than film star Jackie Chan (read more here). Standing proudly on the university campus, some parts of these heritage buildings are accessible and make for a unique hanfu photoshoot location. The intricate architectural details are absolutely mesmerizing, and shooting here feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by literal pieces of history.
Pros:
Stunning historical architecture that offers a rare and captivating setting for hanfu photography. The area is usually quite quiet for a private photoshoot experience.
Cons:
Located in Changi, the pavilions are quite far away from everywhere else in Singapore and requires some travel to get to. The modern buildings in the background will also appear in photos if you try to capture wide shots of the traditional structures.
3. Chinese Gardens (Newly opened!)
This has to be our all-time favourite location for outdoor photoshoots, and the closest we’ll get to travelling to China. Recent upgrades have made the park even more accessible, making it a go-to spot for both tourists and photographers. The Suzhou Bonsai Garden, in particular, stands out as the largest of its kind outside China, providing a stunning and authentic backdrop that beautifully complements the elegance of hanfu.
Pros:
Beautiful, authentic Chinese architecture that adds depth to any photoshoot. There are also sheltered areas available in case of rain, ensuring you're covered no matter the weather.
Cons:
It can get quite crowded on weekends as it's a popular destination for both tourists and photographers, so there might be some waiting involved.
4. Jurong Lake Gardens
Although it’s also located near the Chinese Gardens, Jurong Lake Gardens feels worlds apart, with a long walk separating the two. The park's artificial hills are great for modern photoshoot styles, but what truly sets it apart for us are the wild lalang plants and the artificial lone “tree”—providing a striking contrast to Singapore’s typical urban landscape and evoking the feeling of an untamed grassland. It’s the perfect spot for a more natural, wild aesthetic in your photoshoot.
Pros:
The scenery here feels like a world away from the typical Singapore landscape, offering a unique, "wild grassland" vibe.
Cons:
Shelter is quite far away, so be prepared for the heat or rain. Additionally, there isn’t much variety in terms of the landscape, so props are needed to help add variety to the images.
5. Botanic Gardens
While this location may lack traditional Chinese architecture, its vibrant floral displays make it a beautiful option for a hanfu photoshoot. With creative styling, you can capture images that evoke the feeling of being in a different country during Spring.
Pros:
The gardens are conveniently located in the heart of Singapore. With plenty of diverse spots to explore, there are a wide variety of possible backdrops for your photoshoot.
Cons:
The flowers are seasonal—July and August are ideal for capturing the bougainvillea in full bloom!
6. [BONUS] Singapore City!
Some of our most fun photoshoots and creative images were taken in modern urban spaces in the city. The contrast between sleek, contemporary architecture and the elegance of traditional hanfu brings out a stunning visual harmony that feels both timeless and unique.
For tourists visiting Singapore, this photoshoot offers one of the most unforgettable Singapore travel experiences you can find.
